Eyelid retraction refers to a ‘wide-eyed look’. This occurs when the position of the upper eyelid is very high and the white part of the eye (sclera) can be seen above the cornea. It can lead to an angry or scary look and make the affected individual self-conscious. It can also lead to incomplete closure of the eye and cause dryness and irritation, thus affecting the quality of life. Eyelid retraction occurs most commonly due to thyroid eye disease. Occasionally, it can occur due to other reasons as well.
Assessment of eyelid retraction includes a thorough ophthalmic examination along with some blood tests to rule out thyroid disorders, as needed. Treatment includes surgery to loosen the muscle of the eyelid and lower its level to make it more symmetric and normal-looking. In certain cases of thyroid eye disease, where a temporary fix is needed for eyelid retraction, filler injections can also be performed in the eyelid to provide relief for up to a year.
