Eyelid Twitching

Eyelid Twitching

Eyelid twitching or blepharospasm is a neurological condition when the muscles around our eyes start twitching involuntarily and uncontrollably. The muscles of the face are normally under voluntary control exerted by the brain, when this control is lost it can lead to abnormal twitching of the facial muscles, which may affect the one half of the face (hemifacial spasm) or the area around the eyes (blepharospasm). This can cause a significant impairment in day to day activities as it interferes with normal vision.

Botulinum toxin (Botox, Xeomin, Dysport) injections can be used to provide relief for this condition in most of the patients. The injection takes about 10- 15 minutes and is performed as an outpatient procedure in clinic. The effect of these injections lasts for 3-4 months and they need to be repeated accordingly for continued relief.
