Infection of the lacrimal or tear drainage system is called dacryocystitis and usually presents with redness, swelling and pain over the inner part of the eye and lateral part of the nose. There might also be yellowish discharge from the eyes or from the swelling itself.
Assessment involves thorough clinical examination, which is usually enough to make a preliminary diagnosis. Treatment involves oral or intra-venous antibiotics. Once the infection is resolved, blockage of the naso-lacrimal duct may develop which requires DCR surgery. To know more abut duct bloackage and DCR surgery click here.
