Bulging eyes

Bulging of the eyes or proptosis is a condition where one or both eyes protrude abnormally from the eye socket. This may occur as a slowly progressive or acutely worsening condition. Orbital tumors, thyroid eye disease and orbital inflammation are the most common causes of bulging eyes.

Orbital inflammation or swelling can occur due to infectious or non- infectious causes. It can present as pain, redness, swelling around the eye, occasionally with discharge from the eyes. Patients can also have fever and other systemic findings. Assessment of this condition requires a thorough clinical examination, along with blood tests and imaging tests such as MRI and CT scan as needed.

Treatment involves oral or intravenous antibiotics when the cause is infectious. Occasionally a biopsy maybe required to determine the cause of swelling to decide further course of management.
