Birth or congenital defects are a few rare deformities of the eyes and eyelids that are present at birth and may worsen over a period of time. These conditions usually occur secondary to abnormalities in the in-utero development of the fetus, and may range from mild cosmetic concerns to vision threatening problems. Often they might be associated with involvement of other parts of the body and needed to be managed accordingly.
There a wide range of congenital defects that affect the eyes and the eyelids. A few commonly seen defects include lipodermoid (accumulation of fat, occasionally interspersed with hair follicles on the surface of the eye), eyelid coloboma (defect in the eyelid leading to its incomplete formation), microphthalmos with or without cyst ( small, non-seeing eye with or without an attached cyst filled with fluid), blepharophimosis syndrome (congenitally small eyelid aperture with both vertical and horizontal shortening of the eyelids), etc.
There are many other such birth defects that are best managed by an oculoplastic surgeon.
Assessment of birth defects include a complete examination of the eyes and eyelids along with a detailed systemic examination, often done in consultation with a general practitioner or pediatrician. Treatment includes an approach which addresses all the problems present with a combined or staged approach, as fit.
