Squint

Squint or crossed eyes or strabismus is a common disorder seen in both children and adults. In adults it can occur due to nerve problems, injury or vision problems. In children, it can occur as a birth defect or develop over a period of time and cause decreased vision (amblyopia). Crossed eyes or squint can present with visible misalignment of eyes, double vision, reduced vision or an abnormal position of the head.

Assessment of squint involves a detailed examination that involves checking the visual function of the eye, eye muscle status and if needed, other tests, such as MRI, to rule out neurological defects.

The prognosis depends on the type of squint, age at presentation and other associated conditions, if present. The treatment of squint involves surgery of the eye muscles, this may be preceded and followed by measures such as prescribing glasses and patching of the eye to get the best visual results.
